La Paloma Movie Screening: Music For Mushrooms

La Paloma Theater will host a special screening for East Forest’s new movie/documentary: Music For Mushrooms on Tuesday, October 8th at 7pm.

There will be a screening followed by a panel to answer questions, East Forest will be attending. This movie is about his music being used for having profound shifts while on mushrooms/ music for the psychedelic practitioner.

Else Vellinga is a mycologist who is interested in naming and classifying mushroom species in California and beyond, especially Parasol mushrooms. She has described 22 species as new for California. She got her training at the National Herbarium of the Netherlands, and her PhD at the university of Leiden.

Her interests go beyond taxonomy, and she loves natural history stories of all kinds of organisms. The mysterious world of spores is slowly being opened, and she likes to share the new developments in research and discoveries. Else describes herself as a Dutch, cat-loving, knitting mycologist, who lives in Berkeley, CA.

Cassandra Ablola has been a member of SDMYCO since 2014 and served as the Treasurer from 2017 – 2021 and since then, has served as the President.

She earned her bachelor’s degree at San Diego State University in Applied Design with an emphasis in Jewelry and Metalwork and was a recipient for the San Diego Creative Weaver’s Guild Scholarship in 2013.

Weaving is a practical skill and can be applied to different media. We’ll learn about the history and typical materials, then dive into making our very own mushroom hunting baskets! Let’s get ready by making our new vessels in advance of the fungi foray season ahead.

The upcoming Monday Monthly Mushroom Meeting with Mark Yacoub will cover:

Comparative Genomics of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis: Unveiling Viral Fossils and Their Distribution Across the Fungal Kingdom

Mark completed his B.S. degree in Microbiology at UC Davis in 2016. His professional experience includes research at an agricultural biotechnology company, where he focused on fungal interactions with crop plants. Mark began his doctoral studies in 2020. His dissertation research centers on population genomics of the amphibian pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and the identification of DNA viruses within the Fungal Kingdom.

The San Diego Mycological Society established the Microbiology Award for Excellence in Mycology to be awarded to one meritorious graduate student in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology (MPP) at the University of California, Riverside.
All aspects of fungal biology and ecology are encouraged. A faculty committee will identify the applicant that has demonstrated excellence in research and creative forward-thinking in their dissertation research.
